Some adults such as this are reported to remain in breeding plumage year round. This species is common and widespread in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is often called Kittlitz's Sand Plover or Sandplover. Up to four subspecies have been named, but geographic variation is clinal and no races are currently recognized as valid. It is very similar to and possibly conspecific with the critically endangered St. Helena Plover (C. sanctaehelenae). Another similar bird, the Madagascar Plover (C. thoracicus) occurs on Madagascar. The three may form a superspecies.
