Gymea Lily (Doryanthes excelsa
)
It's pronounced "Guy-ME-ah." These huge, spectacular flowers are endemic to coastal New South Wales near Sydney where they thrive in sandstone soils. The flower spikes grow as high as 20 feet. They are sometimes called "Flame Lilies." They are not true lilies but in the family Doryanthaceae. In the town named for them, an annual Gymea Lily festival celebrates these flowers and serves as a major fundraiser for Gymea Bay Public Schools. Canon PowerShot SX60 HS.
