Vermilion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus blatteus) 26 January 2011, Crooked Tree Village, Belize
District, Belize.
![]() Most flycatchers are drab and cryptic in coloration, but the Vermilion Flycatcher breaks all the rules. These small colorful flycatchers were very common in open areas with sunlight. This is a female. Clements recognizes 13 subspecies in two groups ranging from the United States to South America. The Vermilion group consists of the 11 races on the mainland, while the Galapagos group consists of two races on the Galapagos Islands. The birds in Belize are P. r. blatteus which ranges from SE Mexico to Honduras. They are slightly smaller and deeper red compared to populations breeding in the United States. Females such as this are decidedly pinker, less orange on the underparts. Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LZ5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA | hand-held (no adapter) |
