Yellow-bellied Flycatcher (Empidonax flaviventris) - 4 February 2011, Chan Chich Lodge, Orange Walk District, Belize.

An advantage to visiting in the winter is the number of familiar North American birds which occur in Belize at that season. Flycatchers in the genus Empidonax are always a challenge, especially when not singing, but the Yellow-bellied Flycatcher is fairly distinctive. The yellow coloration to the throat is probably the best field mark. We only encountered a few of these birds, usually within the forest interior. This one posed on the forest edge allowing for photos.

The second photo shows details of the primary wing-projection. Note the short pale-yellow edges to the secondaries do not meet the greater coverts. This pattern may help distinguish this species from members of the Western Flycatcher (Pacific-slope/Cordilleran group) which can closely resemble this species, although neither of those species is known from Belize.
